Ever Tried Walking Without Talking?
Have you ever walked without saying a single word? No music, no texting, no chatting—just you, your thoughts, and the world around you.
On February 23, 2025, I did just that. I joined about 30 people at Botanic Gardens for a mindfulness walk. But this wasn’t your usual walk. This was a chance to disconnect from distractions and reconnect with ourselves.
It was part of Walk with Me Against Stigma 2025 (WWMAS), a movement organized by A Voice to Be Heard (AV2BH), Amy Kang Metaphysics, K Community, and Agent of Change.

Every year, people come together for this event to raise awareness about mental health and how important it is to support one another.
But here’s what made this walk different.
The Power of Silence: No Talking, Just Walking
Right from the start, there was one simple rule: No talking. No phones. Just walking.
At first, it felt strange. Usually, when we walk with a group, we talk. We laugh. We check our phones. But this time, it was just quiet.
And in that quiet, I noticed things I normally wouldn’t.
The soft rustling of the leaves.
The earthy smell of the soil after the morning mist.
The warmth of the sun touching my skin.
The sound of our footsteps, all moving together.
Something happened in that silence. I felt calm. No pressure to talk, no need to “perform” in a conversation. Just being present in the moment.
And honestly? It felt amazing to disconnect.

Reflection Stops: A Space to Share
Every now and then, we stopped walking. These weren’t just rest breaks—they were moments to talk, reflect, and listen.
Some people shared how they’d been feeling overwhelmed with life. Others opened up about their struggles with mental health. And a few got emotional.
And just like that, the silence turned into something powerful.
No one judged.
No one interrupted.
We just listened.
It reminded me why this walk mattered. Because sometimes, healing doesn’t happen in words—it happens in knowing you’re not alone.

Why This Walk Matters
Mental Health Stigma Thrives in Silence—But So Does Healing
Mental health is still a tough topic for many people. Some feel embarrassed. Some feel like no one will understand. But events like this prove something important:
✅ Silence helps us listen to ourselves.
✅ Being present in the moment can be healing.
✅ Walking together—even without words—reminds us we’re not alone.
This was my fourth walk with Mr. Ismail from A Voice to Be Heard, and every time, I leave feeling a little lighter, a little clearer, and a little more at peace. In fact, I’ve decided to do this every three months because it’s that powerful.
Looking Ahead: Walk With Us
If you’ve never tried a mindfulness walk, I highly encourage it.
Think about it: When was the last time you walked without distractions? Without looking at your phone? Without feeling like you had to fill the silence?
If you’re curious, join us for the next walk. It’s a chance to disconnect, breathe, and feel present—and maybe even connect with others in a way you never have before.
